"Prodigal son" と言えばストーンズですが、家を出て放蕩三昧した後に帰ってきた息子をそれでも受け入れる父、と言う主題が元になっており（息子＝人間、父＝神）、転じて今日的には「家を出たけれど改心して戻って来た息子」のモチーフとして理解されているようです。
